Google CEO expresses excitement about collaboration with rival OpenAI

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has voiced strong enthusiasm for the company’s new partnership with OpenAI, despite being one of Google’s biggest competitors in artificial intelligence (AI).

During Alphabet’s second-quarter earnings call, Pichai confirmed that OpenAI will now be using Google Cloud’s infrastructure and services to train and serve its AI models.

“With respect to OpenAI, we are very excited to be partnering with them on Google Cloud,” Pichai said.

“Google Cloud is an open platform, and we’ve long supported leading startups, AI labs, and innovative companies. We're looking forward to expanding this relationship and investing more in it,” he noted.

The remarks follow growing investor concerns about how AI developments could impact Google’s core business, particularly Search.

Analysts questioned the company about its rising capital expenditure, which is expected to grow by $10 billion this year, as it pushes to remain competitive in AI.

While ChatGPT and other OpenAI products challenge Google's dominance in search, the cloud partnership positions Google as a key infrastructure provider in the AI arms race.

According to earlier reports, OpenAI began considering Google Cloud as a supplementary resource for additional computing power in light of its expanding AI model needs.
