Surely the hottest accessory among celebrities right now has to be a football club — mostly low stakes and easily acquired.

Following Ryan Reynolds’ triumphant run with the English club Wrexham A.F.C., many other famous names have been discovered as investors in the football market, with varying results.

Here’s a rundown of the most prominent celebrities to own various football clubs:

Matthew McConaughey

Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey is a minority owner of the American football club, Austin FC.

Part of the Major League Soccer (MLS), the True Detective star came to be associated with the club in 2019.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman became the co-founder of Angel City, a club which is part of the American National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), in 2020.

The club is a certifiably hot celeb property, with former US football players Shannon Boxx, Lauren Holiday, Julie Foudy, and Abby Wambach also joining Angel City’s ranks through its investor group.

Jessica Chastain

Another established actress, Jessica Chastain joins Natalie Portman in the hierarchy at Angel City.

The 48-year-old Oscar winner joined the club’s investors in 2020, becoming part owner of the American women’s side.

Reese Witherspoon

A Nashville native, Reese Witherspoon became a minority owner for the MLS side, Nashville FC three years ago.

She joined the club’s ownership along with her ex-husband, Jim Toth, back in April 2022 — just a month before the team’s stadium, Geodis Park, was set to open.

Michael B. Jordan

Investing in a comparatively well known and historical side, Michael B. Jordan came on board the football club express with the Premiere League team AFC Bournemouth in December 2022.

Besides benefitting from his international image, the club also unveiled special kits designed by the Sinners star in July 2024 — just in time for the start of their 2024/25 season.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria became a football club owner with her investment in the Mexican side, Necaxa.

Coming onboard, she joined a stellar lineup of celebrity and football heavyweights in the club’s ranks, including Kate Upton and former German and Arsenal player Mesut Ozil.

Ed Sheeran

The Shape of You hitmaker Ed Sheeran chose to become part owner in the English club, Ipswich Town F.C.

Officially joining the club’s ownership ranks in August 2024, the Grammy winning musician had also been providing the front-of-short sponsorship for Ipswich’s kits since their 2021/22 season, before the deal ended with the conclusion of their last campaign.

Elton John

A football story right on par with Ryan Reynolds’ success at Wrexham, Elton John fulfilled his dream of seeing his boyhood club Watford FC prosper on a big scale.

Not just a part owner or minority investor, Elton John outright bought the club in 1976, became its chairman, and oversaw his team’s rise from the Fourth Division to First Division of English football by the 1980s.
