Shaun White and Nina Dobrev’s journey: From engagement to split after 5 years

Shaun White and Nina Dobrev have officially called it quits.

The Olympic snowboarder and The Vampire Diaries star have ended their engagement after five years together, PEOPLE has confirmed exclusively.

According to a source close to the couple, "it was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another." But representatives for both Shaun and Nina have not commented.

The pair were last seen together on August 31, 2025, in Los Angeles, holding hands while running errands but just a week later, on September 7.

The Love Hard star attended the Eternity premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival without her 5 carat engagement ring. She has also unpinned her engagement announcement from Instagram, where it had remained since White proposed in October 2024.

Shaun and Nina first crossed paths briefly at an awards show in 2012, but didn’t truly connect until 2019, when both were booked as speakers at a Tony Robbins event in Florida.

Recalling that night, Shaun told PEOPLE in January 2022 that he “actually didn't know anything about Nina” at first. He was amused when several staff members asked for photos with her, saying, "And I was like, ‘What's happening? What's going on?' It was actually really funny."

The couple began dating in 2019 and moved in together at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and Shaun made their relationship Instagram official in May 2020, posting photos of Nina giving him a quarantine haircut.

He later shared that living together strengthened their bond. "Nina's just been so supportive and so amazing through this whole process for me," Shaun said. "Through the pandemic, she was a lifesaver, she really made that time in my life special."

Over the years, they were regulars on red carpets and frequently shared glimpses of their travels, Coachella trips, and daily life on social media as Nina also supported White during his fifth and final Winter Olympics in 2022, which he described as “emotional” and “overwhelming.”

Before the event, he hinted at proposing to Nina, saying they were enjoying life together with “no pressure” but added, “you never know we will see.”

Shaun proposed to Nina in October 2024 during a surprise dinner at The Golden Swan in New York City. “She said YES,” he shared on Instagram at the time. The Originals star captioned her post “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé.”
