The mega success that was HBO’s Big Little Lies has been officially confirmed to return and the news is already buzzing.

Executive producer and star on the show, Reese Witherspoon recently addressed the return of the drama, based on Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name, when she made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“We might be working on Season 3. Yeah, I mean, they’re writing it. It’s exciting too, just to get the gang back together and have everybody start talking about it. It’s really fun,” the Oscar winning actress shared.

Here’s everything you can expect from the show’s revival:

The announcement

While the show’s first two seasons were written by its creator and other executive producer David E. Kelley, the new season will be penned by Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-creator Francesca Sloane.

This announcement has proven to be the most concrete confirmation about the series’ return so far and was first reported by Variety.

Moreover, the second season of Sloane’s own show has been indefinitely delayed at Amazon Prime Video, confirming the screenwriter’s involvement with the HBO drama.

The stars

Per usual, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are set to lead the show and are also the primary cast members who have teased its return over time since both of the actresses share executive producing credits on Big Little Lies.

Kidman confirmed the development of a third season during her and Witherspoon’s joint interview for Vanity Fair last year.

“Just you wait! We’re moving fast and furious. And Liane is delivering the book. And we’re in good shape,” she told the publication.

The plot

Based on Kidman’s statement and according to Deadline, author Liane Moriarty is indeed working on a literary sequel to her book which provided the basis of the show’s two seasons so far.

“Moriarty’s followup to her 2014 ‘Big Little Lies’ novel, on which the Emmy winning first season of the HBO series was based, is believed to be finished and will be published in 2026,” the entertainment news outlet reported.

Since the novel releases next year, it can be deduced that there is still considerable time before the planned season starts filming.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the book’s sequel and the show will feature a time jump — the Monterey five, played by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Kravitz, will be mothers to teenagers once Big Little Lies picks up again.
