Experts say AI tools can strengthen police efforts against human trafficking
AI is increasingly being viewed as a powerful solution against human trafficking
In an era where human trafficking has become both more common and more technologically sophisticated, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being viewed as a powerful solution.
The US Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation held a high-stakes hearing this week, examining how human traffickers exploit modern technology and how AI can help law enforcement fight back.
During the session, lawmakers warned that traffickers now use encrypted platforms, digital marketplaces, and social media to target victims, while police departments remain overloaded and under-equipped.
Experts told Congress that AI can analyse massive datasets in seconds, flag suspicious online patterns, and identify potential victims far faster than any manual process.
That said, they also stressed the need for strict safeguards. Members of Congress repeatedly raised concerns about privacy, ensuring that AI tools do not expose or further harm human trafficking survivors.
Republican Party member Eric Burlison pressed witnesses on how anti-trafficking organisations can share critical data with law enforcement without compromising victims’ identities.
Moreover, Chairwoman Nancy Mace highlighted that Congress must now evaluate existing federal laws and close major gaps that allow traffickers to slip through.
