Elon Musk's Starlink offers free internet services in Iran amid protests
Starlink is providing free internet access in Iran amid anti-government protests
Elon Musk’s SpaceX is providing free internet access in Iran through its Starlink network, as the country faces widespread internet shutdowns amid ongoing anti-government protests.
Ahmad Ahmadian, executive director of the technology nonprofit Holistic Resilience, said users can access the service by simply powering up their terminals in areas with a clear view of the sky.
“It’s plug and connect … just put [the satellite terminal] somewhere that has access to a clear view of the sky, and you’re good to go,” Ahmadian explained.
Notably, Starlink terminals in Iran that were previously inactive are now operational, with subscription fees temporarily waived.
The move follows a phone call earlier this week between Musk and US President Donald Trump, during which Starlink access in Iran was discussed.
For several days, Iranian authorities have restricted internet access across the country, creating what observers describe as one of the largest digital blackouts in recent years.
According to human rights groups, more than 1,800 protesters have been killed during the unrest, though the true number may be higher due to limited communication.
While free satellite internet access is seen as a crucial tool for activists and journalists, experts have cautioned that only a small fraction of Iran’s roughly 92 million people are likely to benefit.
