Grey's Anatomy lost a cherished member. Eric Dane, renowned among fans of the classic ABC medical series, passed away on February 19 at 53 following a struggle with ALS.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eric Dane,” the network and series producer 20th Television said in a joint statement Thursday night.

“His remarkable talent and unforgettable presence on Grey’s Anatomy left a lasting impact on audiences around the world, and his courage and grace during his battle with ALS inspired so many. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as the many fans whose lives were touched by his work.

Grey's Anatomy plans to honor Dane in the upcoming episode scheduled next week as the medical drama returns from hiatus.

Initially appearing as a guest in Season 2, Dane became a permanent cast member the following season, portraying the beloved Mark Sloan, also known as "McSteamy."

He remained on the series until the Season 9 premiere, where Mark and Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) tragically died following the plane crash in the Season 8 finale.

Their legacy persists as Seattle Grace Mercy West was renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to commemorate them.

Grey's Anatomy actor Kevin McKidd, who shared the screen with Dane for four seasons, posted a tribute photo of him from the show with the words, "Rest In Peace Buddy..."

Dane and Leigh reappeared during the pandemic-stricken 2020-21 season in dream sequences set by the beach, while Covid-affected Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) lay in a coma.

Suitably, it was Mark and Meredith's sister Lexie who persuaded her to fight and survive, leading to her recovery.

During Dane's 2021 appearance on Grey's Anatomy, Mark shares in a poignant scene what he misses about living, particularly mentioning his daughter Sofia and confiding that he talks to her often.
