Demi Lovato has opened up about her journey toward healing, describing learning to cook as a “huge win” in her recovery from an eating disorder.

The singer shared the personal milestone while speaking at an event in New York alongside Eli Rallo, where she discussed her upcoming cookbook, One Plate at a Time: Recipes for Finding Freedom with Food, set for release on March 31.

The book features more than 80 recipes and reflects Lovato’s evolving relationship with food after years of struggling with bulimia.

Rather than focusing solely on cooking, the project highlights her journey toward reclaiming joy and comfort in the kitchen.

Lovato revealed that her perspective began to shift several years into recovery, when cooking with friends became a turning point.

What once felt overwhelming — even stepping into a grocery store — gradually transformed into an empowering experience.

“I used to step foot into a grocery store and break down into tears,” she shared.

“Now I’m not only shopping for myself, but also cooking the meals I make — and that’s a huge win for me.”

One early breakthrough came while preparing a spaghetti squash dish with friends, a moment she described as unexpectedly joyful.

“I was proud of what I made,” she said, adding that it helped her rediscover a sense of celebration around food.

Lovato emphasized that the cookbook is designed for those who may feel intimidated by cooking or who have experienced disordered eating.

Her goal, she explained, is to encourage people to build confidence in the kitchen at their own pace.

“This book is a celebration of how far I’ve come,” she said. “It’s about finding comfort, freedom and joy, something I never thought I would experience with food.”
