OpenAI launches desktop super app merging ChatGPT, Browser, and Codex
Fidji Simo will direct this transition alongside OpenAI President Greg Brockman
OpenAI plans to merge its web browser, ChatGPT application, and Codex coding program into a single comprehensive desktop app.
According to CNBC, Fidji Simo, who is OpenAI's CEO of Applications, will direct this transition alongside OpenAI President Greg Brockman, as stated by a company representative.
This initiative intends to unify OpenAI's services to improve user interface and minimise product separation.
"Companies experience periods of exploration and regrouping; both are essential," Simo wrote in a message on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.
"But as our new endeavors like Codex begin to succeed, it's crucial to focus on them and steer clear of diversions. I am truly thrilled we're taking advantage of this opportunity."
The Wall Street Journal was the first to break the news of the all-in-one app.
Combining OpenAI's offerings into one platform follows Simo's recent team meeting where she responded to staff queries about the firm's objectives.
She elaborated that OpenAI is "aggressively focusing" on productivity-enhancing applications.
"Our top priority is concentrating our efforts and achieving outstanding results," Simo stated during the session, according to a partial transcript obtained by CNBC.
OpenAI rose to prominence after launching the ChatGPT chatbot in 2022 and has rapidly become one of the fastest-growing companies globally.
In recent months, the company introduced numerous new products and services, including its Codex app and browser, striving to stay ahead of competitors like Google and Anthropic.
The firm brought in Simo, formerly the CEO of Instacart, to oversee its applications division last May.
She has been driving a focus on precision and product discipline at OpenAI as the organisation prepares for a potential stock market debut, possibly occurring later this year.
