Medical experts are challenging the long-standing misconception that egg yolks should be avoided due to cholesterol concerns.

Dr Shubham Vatsya, a specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology, recently highlighted that for those without pre-existing conditions like diabetes or hypertension, the yolk is a nutritional powerhouse rather than a dietary risk.

He noted that many people mistakenly avoid yolks while consuming processed foods, stating: “In our country, there is an obsession with the notion that egg yolks raise cholesterol levels. Yet people wake up in the morning, eat jalebis, refined-flour noodles, bread pakoras, and French fries, and find nothing wrong with that.”

A single egg white provides only three grams of protein, whereas the yolk offers an additional three grams alongside essential vitamins.

Dr Vatsya emphasised that eggs are a cost-effective alternative to expensive supplements, particularly for maintaining hair and brain health.

He observed: “Nowadays, young women—influenced by various social media influencers—are consuming a multitude of supplements that come with exorbitant price tags. Yet, a single egg costs merely 6 rupees in the market.”

The underrated power of eggs

The nutritional profile of a whole egg supports several vital bodily functions:

  • Healthy fats and choline for brain health
  • Antioxidants for maintaining sharp eyesight
  • Biotin and Vitamin B12 for healthy hair
  • All nine essential amino acids for muscle recovery

Don't skip the yolk

For individuals with a normal lipid profile, consuming up to three yolks daily is considered safe.

Dr Vatsya concluded: “It boosts good cholesterol, keeps sugar stable, and supports immunity, plus muscle recovery. With all 9 essential amino acids, eggs are a powerhouse of nutrition. The simplest step to better health? Add eggs to your daily plate.”
