How to build a professional three-step regime for highly reactive skin
Expert warns that pollution and weather are the top triggers for skin redness
Managing sensitive skin has become a primary focus for dermatologists who warn that modern environmental factors and complex beauty regimes are increasingly compromising the skin barrier.
Dr Akriti Gupta, founder of Jivisha Clinic, explains that this sensitivity often manifests as redness, itching, or irritation. "People with sensitive skin often react quickly to changes in products, weather, or lifestyle habits. The key is to identify triggers and keep the skincare routine simple and gentle," she notes.
Identifying core environmental triggers
Environmental exposure remains the most prevalent cause of skin reactivity. Dr Gupta identifies several critical factors:
- Climate and pollution: Extreme weather and urban pollutants can weaken natural defences. "Excessive sun exposure, pollution, and extreme weather conditions such as heat or cold can weaken the skin barrier and cause irritation," she explains.
- Chemical irritants: Products containing alcohol or strong fragrances can disrupt the protective layer.
- Lifestyle impacts: Factors such as stress and sleep deprivation can heighten skin reactivity.
A professional three-step regime
The dermatologist advocates for a minimalist approach to daily care. She recommends starting with a fragrance-free cleanser that removes debris "without stripping the skin of its natural moisture."
This should be followed by hydration using ceramides or hyaluronic acid. "A lightweight moisturiser helps restore the skin barrier and prevents dryness," she emphasises.
Finally, daily application of broad-spectrum SPF 30 is essential. Dr Gupta concludes that "Sensitive skin is manageable when you understand its triggers and adopt a consistent skincare routine," urging patients to avoid over-exfoliation and perform patch tests for all new products.
