While facial skincare is a common priority for many, the delicate area surrounding the eyes often requires a more specialised approach.

Dr Himanshu Mehta, a senior ophthalmologist at ASG The Vission Eye Center, explains that the skin around the eyes is ten times thinner than the skin on the cheeks.

Crucially, this area lacks the oil glands present on the rest of the face, making it far more susceptible to dryness, fine lines, and irritation.

To manage these concerns, Dr Mehta recommends a dedicated eye skincare routine that focuses on protection and nourishment rather than aggressive treatment.

Professional Makeup Removal and Moisturisation

Proper hygiene is essential for maintaining both skin health and ophthalmological safety. Dr Mehta warns against using harsh cloths or rubbing the eyes, as chronic rubbing can lead to the thinning of the cornea.

  • Removal Technique: Use a soft cotton pad and a "press and hold" method rather than pulling at the skin.
  • Hydration: Apply a pea-sized amount of non-fragrant, safe cream. Avoid products with strong scents, as these frequently trigger redness and itching.
  • Relaxation: Utilise cold and warm compresses with fresh water and separate containers for each eye to ensure hygiene and comfort.

Lifestyle Factors and Internal Health

Skincare alone cannot solve issues like dark circles if lifestyle habits are neglected. Dr Mehta notes that sleep deprivation raises cortisol levels, increasing blood flow that appears as a bluish tint through the translucent under-eye skin.

Furthermore, diet plays a significant role in eye appearance. High salt intake can lead to fluid retention and puffiness.

To achieve a contoured look, the doctor advises balancing sodium with potassium-rich foods and staying well-hydrated, noting that internal balance is often more effective than topical quick fixes.

Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule remains the most vital step for skin rejuvenation.
