Eva Longoria voices concerns about WBD-Paramount merger
Longoria has entered discussion about Warner Bros. Discovery-Paramount merger's potential effects
Eva Longoria has entered the discussion about the potential effects of the Warner Bros. Discovery–Paramount merger, sharing her concerns on how this union might influence employment and diversity within the industry.
“The concerning part about consolidation... is that it leads to a significant reduction in creative jobs and culminates in a more isolated system,” Longoria expressed during an interview for BBC Radio 4’s Today program on Friday.
“I might end up pitching only a single person for, you know, five various buyers, but when it boils down to pitching to one person… the end result in that scenario is the decline of innovation and diversity, resembling a cookie-cutter approach focused solely on specific themes like medical dramas,” she commented.
The American actress, producer, and director, who has been overseeing production and directing through her Hyphenate Media Group since 2016, while also acting, has collaborated with both studios throughout the years.
Her statements follow an announcement, made less than a day ago, revealing that Warner Bros. Discovery scheduled an April 23 date for a shareholder vote concerning its sale to Paramount Skydance, marking a crucial move in the merger process.
In additional news from Thursday, the Los Angeles County Board Of Supervisors decided to carry out an assessment of the proposed merger, focusing on its impact on the workforce within the entertainment sector.
When questioned by the Today program about the regulators' role in this merger, Longoria responded: “We must all stay alert to the developments that unfold. It's expected to remain as separate operations. But in reality, who can say for certain?”
