Robert Pattinson to remain Batman in separate Matt Reeves universe
James Gunn and Andy Muschietti speak out as fans speculate on the next DCU Dark Knight
Director Andy Muschietti has issued a "reality check" to DC fans as speculation regarding the casting of the next Batman reaches a fever pitch.
Speaking recently to CinemaBlend, the filmmaker behind The Flash acknowledged the internet's obsession with who will don the cowl in the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) film, The Brave and the Bold.
While Muschietti admitted to being "curious" about fan-favourite picks—which currently include Reacher star Alan Ritchson, Jonathan Bailey, and Jensen Ackles—he firmly stated that the final decision rests solely with him and the film's producer, Barbara Muschietti.
"I love our people, love our audiences, but in the end... we get to do is to pick our cast," he noted, effectively cooling expectations of a fan-driven selection.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has also weighed in on the frenzy, confirming on Monday, 30 March 2026, that he has a "top of the list" for the role, much like he did during the search for David Corenswet’s Superman.
However, Gunn remains tight-lipped, teasing that while fans may guess correctly on certain details, no official announcement is imminent.
He emphasised that the priority remains on perfecting the script before securing the lead. This new Batman will exist in a separate continuity from Robert Pattinson’s version, as Matt Reeves continues his standalone The Batman saga.
The Brave and the Bold is currently slated for a theatrical release in October 2027. This iteration of the Dark Knight will not be a solo act, as the film is set to introduce Bruce Wayne’s biological son, Damian Wayne, who will serve as the DCU's Robin.
The story is expected to draw heavy inspiration from Grant Morrison’s seminal comic book run, focusing on the complex and often volatile relationship between father and son.
