Katie Couric has opened up about a deeply personal chapter of her life, revealing her “biggest regret” while caring for her late husband, Jay Monahan, during his battle with Colon cancer.

Katie Couric has shared a deeply personal chapter of her life, revealing her “biggest regret” while caring for her late husband, Jay Monahan, during his battle with colon cancer.

In a recent interview with USA Today, Couric, 69, shared that she and Monahan never discussed the possibility of his death during his illness, a decision she now wishes had been different.

“My biggest regret… was that I never really talked to my husband about the possibility that he might die,” she said, noting they avoided those difficult conversations while holding onto hope.

Monahan died in 1998 at the age of 42, leaving behind Couric and their two young daughters.

Reflecting on that time, the veteran broadcaster said she believes professional guidance could have helped them navigate those emotionally complex discussions.

Despite the loss, Couric has since become a leading advocate for colorectal cancer awareness.

Following her husband’s death, she used her platform—including a widely noted on-air colonoscopy—to encourage early screenings and proactive health checks.

She continues to stress the urgency of early detection, particularly as diagnoses are increasingly being seen in younger age groups.

Couric urged individuals to seek medical advice at the first sign of symptoms and not to hesitate to ask for help while caring for others.

Beyond her advocacy work, Couric also reflected on life after loss, sharing gratitude for witnessing milestones her husband missed—such as their daughters growing up and building their own lives.

In 2024, Couric became a grandmother, revealing that her grandson carries the nickname “Jay” in tribute to Monahan.

The gesture, she said, is one of many ways his memory continues to live on within the family.
