Man throws baby down stairs into trash, eludes police for nine months
Authorities in Maryland have detained a 23-year-old man
Authorities in Maryland have detained a 23-year-old man accused of hurling a 1-year-old child down stairs and throwing them out of a window into the garbage.
Kevin Alec Morris faces charges for attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, child abuse, and reckless endangerment, among other allegations.
The Prince George's County Sheriff's Office stated in a press release that deputies responded to a call regarding an ongoing assault on June 5 at Morris' residence in the 4000 block of Southern Avenue in Capitol Heights, just outside of Washington, D.C. Morris reportedly threw the child down a staircase.
"He then dashed downstairs, picked up the child, and locked himself in a room," police reported.
While inside, he allegedly tossed the child out through a window, causing them to fall into a garbage bin outside, according to officials.
Authorities rescued the child; however, Morris managed to evade capture for nearly nine months despite an active warrant for his arrest.
He was taken into custody on March 25, as noted in Friday's press release.
The police have not provided a motive for the alleged assault on the child, nor have they clarified his relationship to the victim.
Details about the child's health have not been disclosed. A probable cause affidavit with more information on the case is not yet available.
He is represented by a public defender, and it's not known whether he has entered a plea.
The defendant is currently held without bail at the Prince George's County Jail. He is scheduled for a preliminary court hearing on April 24.
