New York man arrested for allegedly beating and choking 75-year-old mother
The victim was hospitalized with swelling, lacerations, and had briefly lost consciousness
A 37-year-old New York man, John Strano, was arrested Wednesday after allegedly attacking his 75-year-old mother during a violent argument in their Williston Park home, Nassau County police said.
According to authorities, Strano allegedly pushed his mother to the ground, slammed her head into the floor, and repeatedly struck her with a metal clamp.
Prosecutors claimed that during the attack, he shouted at her, “Why aren’t you dying?” and, “Why are you still breathing?”
Police responded to a 911 call reporting the assault. When officers arrived, the victim reported the incident and described the attack.
She was transported to a local hospital, where she remains in stable condition, authorities said.
Strano fled the scene but was located more than a mile away at a nearby elementary school baseball field after school hours.
He was arrested without incident and taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Prosecutors told the court that the victim sustained swelling to her face and head, severe lacerations, and lost consciousness at one point.
John Strano faces multiple charges, including second-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded pending further proceedings.
