How excessive caffeine blocks essential sleep-promoting effects of adenosine
Medical specialist Ravi Kesari warns that increased focus often masks underlying signs of overuse
The instinct to reach for a coffee during an energy dip is a foundational part of daily routines for many. While caffeine offers notable benefits for concentration and motivation, recognising the point of overconsumption is vital for maintaining long-term health.
Dr Ravi Kesari, a specialist in internal medicine at Apollo Spectra Hospital in Bengaluru, explains that coffee functions as a potent stimulant by blocking adenosine and increasing dopamine levels.
However, as the brain develops a tolerance, individuals often adapt to higher doses, making overuse the "new normal."
Identifying the signs of overconsumption
For most adults, ingesting more than 400 mg of caffeine daily—approximately three to four cups—is considered overconsumption.
Dr Kesari notes that while individual metabolism varies, several physical indicators suggest you are going overboard:
- Physical restlessness: Increased adrenaline stimulates the nervous system, leading to jitteriness.
- Heart palpitations: Excessive intake can cause noticeable changes in heart rhythm.
- Sleep disruptions: Because caffeine remains in the system for five to seven hours, late-afternoon consumption frequently hinders the ability to fall asleep.
Optimising your caffeine routine
To balance productivity with health, timing is essential. Dr Kesari recommends consuming coffee mid-morning, once natural waking cortisol levels begin to dip, to better synchronise with the body's alertness cycle.
For those who are health-conscious, black coffee is the preferred option as it supports fat metabolism.
To avoid unnecessary calorie increases and sugar spikes, it is essential to consume the beverage without the addition of syrups, cream, or sugar.
