Harrison Ford has opened up about quietly battling depression earlier in his life, sharing how the experience ultimately led him toward a transformative path in storytelling and acting.

The Hollywood icon, now 83, reflected on a particularly difficult period before he fully committed to his acting career, admitting he struggled with severe emotional and psychological challenges that he kept largely to himself at the time.

Speaking on the Awards Chatter podcast, Ford recalled isolating himself during his college years, often unable to bring himself to attend classes despite being enrolled in a drama course.

He described moments of approaching a classroom door only to turn back, overwhelmed by what he later recognized as more than just temporary sadness.

“I was more than depressed… I think I was ill,” Ford shared, candidly acknowledging the depth of his struggle. “I was socially ill, psychologically not well.”

However, it was within that same academic environment that Ford experienced a turning point. Surrounded by fellow students he initially viewed as outsiders, he began to see them — and himself — in a new light.

Their passion for storytelling and understanding of human behavior resonated deeply, helping him discover a sense of belonging he had previously lacked.

Ford credited this realization with reshaping his outlook on life, ultimately guiding him toward a career that would define generations of cinema.
