Dylan Mulvaney calls for more trans representation on Broadway
Mulvaney praises the supportive community she’s found on stage
Dylan Mulvaney has celebrated the sense of community she’s found on Broadway while also calling for greater trans representation in the theater world.
Speaking with People at the opening night of Cats: The Jellicle Ball in New York City, Mulvaney, 29, said the most meaningful part of her Broadway journey has been connecting with fellow performers, especially other trans women.
“Honestly, I think the other dolls on Broadway,” she told People, describing the tight-knit support system within the theater community. “It is a community.”
Mulvaney added a direct call for expanded inclusion in the industry, saying, “We need more dolls on Broadway. Let’s get them there.”
The term “dolls” is commonly used as an affectionate reference within trans and ballroom culture, particularly among trans women and transfeminine individuals.
Mulvaney, who rose to prominence through her viral “Days of Girlhood” series documenting her transition, is currently starring as Anne Boleyn in the Broadway hit Six.
The performer, who trained in musical theatre at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, has spoken openly about the significance of her Broadway debut, calling it a “miracle” given the challenges trans performers continue to face.
Her casting in Six marks a milestone moment in her career, as the musical reimagines historical queens through a modern, feminist lens — a theme Mulvaney has said resonates deeply with her own journey of identity and self-expression.
