Gunfire erupts on Atlantic Avenue leaving eight victims with serious injuries
Police identified eighteen-year-old Isaiah Charity as a suspect currently at large
Eight people were injured in a shooting at Virginia Beach on Saturday, after a violent altercation broke out between two unrelated groups of young adults and juveniles.
Officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Atlantic Avenue at approximately 9:50 p.m. following reports of gunfire.
Upon arrival, emergency services discovered eight victims, ranging in age from 17 to 24, with gunshot wounds.
The injured individuals were transported to local hospitals with conditions varying from non-life-threatening to serious; however, all are currently expected to survive.
Investigators have arrested 18-year-old Jamaya Williams of Henrico County, who was among those shot and is alleged to have been in illegal possession of two firearms.
She faces twenty-four charges, including seven counts of aggravated assault and seven counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Police are actively searching for two further suspects, including 18-year-old Isaiah Charity of Richmond and an unidentified male.
"We know that when an incident like this happens, it causes concern. That’s why we take these so seriously," stated Deputy Chief William Zelms, who confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The shooting occurred despite a weekend curfew enacted on 7 March following a similar incident where six bystanders were injured.
The city remains under restrictions that prohibit unaccompanied minors from the Oceanfront between 7pm and 5am through the end of April.
Authorities have requested that anyone with video footage or information regarding the whereabouts of the outstanding suspects contact the Virginia Beach Police Department.
