James McAvoy pushes back on Hollywood’s obsession with youth
The 'Atonement' star insists he doesn’t rely on looks to land roles
James McAvoy has spoken out about aging in Hollywood, saying he is not concerned about growing older or chasing unrealistic beauty standards in an industry often fixated on youth.
Speaking on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, the X-Men star addressed the pressure many actors face around maintaining their looks, revealing that he does not lose sleep over aging and feels comfortable with where he stands in his career.
“I think in a normal way, like everybody does,” McAvoy said when asked about aging, adding that he believes he is “doing okay” and does not rely on his appearance to land roles.
The actor emphasized that his career has not been driven by conventional attractiveness, noting that he does not think he is cast simply because he is “good-looking,” but rather for his craft and performances.
McAvoy also spoke candidly about physical changes that come with age, including hair loss, saying he has come to accept them naturally rather than resist them.
“But not everyone is allowing aging to take its course,” he added, turning his attention to the growing trend of cosmetic procedures in the entertainment industry.
The actor suggested that efforts to artificially maintain a youthful appearance can sometimes have the opposite effect, arguing that such interventions may leave people looking “weirder” rather than younger.
His remarks reflect a broader conversation in Hollywood about aging, authenticity, and the pressure to conform to evolving beauty standards, with McAvoy positioning himself firmly in favor of embracing change rather than fighting it.
