The biographical drama centered on pioneering boxer Christy Martin has surged to the top spot on HBO Max, marking a notable turnaround for the actress following a disappointing box office run.

Released in 2025, Christy underperformed commercially, reportedly earning just $2 million in theaters.

However, its arrival on streaming platforms appears to have given the film a second life, drawing in viewers who may have skipped its theatrical release.

The film explores Martin’s rise to fame in the 1990s, when she became one of the most recognizable figures in women’s boxing, aided by high-profile promoter Don King.

Beyond her achievements in the ring, the story delves into her turbulent and abusive relationship with her then-husband, James Martin, a central narrative thread that shifts the film away from a traditional sports biopic.

Still, Sweeney’s performance has been widely viewed as a committed effort, particularly given the departure from her more glamorous on-screen image.

The role follows a pattern in Sweeney’s recent career choices, including her portrayal of whistleblower Reality Winner in Reality, highlighting her shift toward more complex, real-life characters.

Despite its theatrical struggles, Christy has benefited from the accessibility of streaming, where audiences can engage with the film without the barriers of cinema attendance.

The digital release has also sparked renewed conversation online, with both fans and critics revisiting the project.
