Mark Zuckerberg returns to coding, relocates desk: Meta president reveals

Mark Zuckerberg has gained a new viewpoint regarding the AI competition — quite literally.

The Meta CEO has positioned his desk among the company's AI specialists, providing him with a prime view of the company's overhaul of its AI initiatives. Additionally, he's returned to coding.

"Mark has indeed moved his desk to join the AI lab with Alex Wang and Nat Friedman, and he spends his day programming," Meta President Dina Powell McCormick remarked during an appearance at Semafor's World Economy Summit in Washington, D.C.

In a light-hearted manner, McCormick added, "On one side, they're probably thinking, 'Oh great, more suggestions from you, Mark, as you're programming.'"

Taking on a more earnest tone, she explained that Zuckerberg believes it's crucial to be this involved in the company's AI endeavors.

"I believe he feels it's essential to comprehend it on that level to truly consider how to make our model the strongest it can be," McCormick said.

McCormick's remarks come after prior reports depicting Zuckerberg's deep involvement in Meta's AI development as competition from OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini intensifies.

In June, Bloomberg reported that Zuckerberg had "realigned desks at the company's Menlo Park headquarters so the new team would sit near him."

On Monday, the Financial Times reported that Zuckerberg "has been dedicating five to ten hours weekly to coding various AI projects" and reviewing others' work.

Meta has invested billions into establishing its new AI team, known as Superintelligence Labs, which includes spending about $15 billion on Scale AI to attract cofounder Alexandr Wang. Zuckerberg has been actively involved in recruitment for this team.

McCormick also mentioned that former Github CEO Nat Friedman, who joined Meta in July, is aiding in the company's development of AI solutions.

Publicly, Meta has been seen as lagging behind other major tech firms and frontier model creators in the generative AI sector, a perception that the MSL team seeks to address with innovative models.

OpenAI has led the AI chatbot landscape with ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Google has successfully leveraged its "full-stack" advantage to stay competitive against OpenAI.

Anthropic has earned widespread acclaim for its AI breakthroughs over the past six months, including Claude Code and Cowork.

Recently, Anthropic decided not to publicly release its latest model, Claude Mythos, due to concerns that it excels at identifying cybersecurity weaknesses.

Signs are emerging that Meta's significant investment in enhancing the MSL team is beginning to yield positive results.

Meta's stock saw an 8% rise following the launch of Muse Spark, its newest AI model created by Superintelligence Labs. Zuckerberg described it as the team's "first milestone."
