Adobe is taking a major leap forward with AI technology that assists users in modifying their creations through simple written instructions, rather than manually operating distinct Creative Cloud applications.

The company's latest Firefly AI Assistant enables users to communicate their desired changes by entering phrases into an easy-to-use chat setup.

Adobe states this signifies a “significant transformation in executing creative tasks” by eliminating technical barriers and tedious chores, while still enabling creatives to maintain control over their projects.

The Firefly AI studio platform will feature this tool "soon," according to Adobe, although no exact release date was mentioned.

This integrated AI interface, evolving from the Project Moonlight experiment that Adobe unveiled at its Max event last year, effortlessly executes “sophisticated, multi-stage processes” to modify projects by leveraging a variety of tools and apps (including Firefly, Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, Express, Illustrator, and others) on behalf of the user.

Firefly AI Assistant users can command the virtual helper to “enhance this photo” or “adjust this for online platforms,” for instance, with Adobe’s AI then delivering a range of editing options to select from, along with revealing specific tools or sliders that let creators refine the outcomes.

For further refinement, artists can also complete the project by using Creative Cloud applications.

The Firefly AI assistant adapts to the user's personal tastes over time, including favored tools, methods, and stylistic preferences, to ensure outcomes are tailored and uniform.

Adobe's AI leader, Alexandru Costin, shared with The Verge that artists can decide whether to utilise this feature and can designate certain projects for the AI to study from.

Creatives can also construct “Creative Skills” — presets that offer steady and specified results — which the AI can apply, or choose from a curated selection of skills at launch.

This represents Adobe’s newest venture into AI-driven tools, having previously introduced specific AI assistants for applications like Adobe Acrobat, Express, and Photoshop.

Adobe reports that it plans to enable these AI features with third-party applications like Anthropic’s Claude, granting those users access to Adobe tools beyond its Firefly and Creative Cloud platforms.

The announcement is accompanied by fresh image, video, and audio editing tools for the Firefly platform, which are becoming available from today.

The Firefly Video Editor now includes integration with Adobe Stock for easy sourcing of extra footage and offers new options for adjusting color balances and clarity in spoken comments.

Enhanced features are also introduced in the Firefly image editing suite — Precision Flow lets creators generate and compare a broader array of images without revising their prompts, and a novel AI Markup tool allows users to define edit areas using brush and rectangle tools or reference visuals.
