Abbey Romeo’s mom reveals reason behind David Isaacman breakup
The split came after nearly five years of dating, Abbey's mom explained
Abbey Romeo and David Isaacman’s breakup is being framed by family as a story of growth rather than conflict, following the couple’s split after nearly five years together.
Abbey’s mother, Christine Romeo, addressed the separation in a YouTube video shared on Sunday alongside Abbey’s cousin Mary, pushing back on speculation that drama or disagreements led to the end of the relationship.
“There was no fight over engagements and rings being thrown around,” Christine said. “I think people are missing the point on Abbey and David.”
The former couple, who met on the first season of Love on the Spectrum in 2021, had been the longest-standing relationship to emerge from the Netflix series.
According to Christine, the split came after both realized they ultimately wanted different things in life.
“David was happy in his way of doing life,” she said. “And Abbey’s was different. And they found that out over this period of time.”
Christine described their nearly five-year relationship as a meaningful chapter for both, emphasizing that its value was not diminished by its ending.
“I’m grateful for the time they had. It was a fabulous relationship,” she said. “For anybody, a five-year relationship is a successful relationship. You learn so much, you grow so much.”
She also clarified that the show’s timeline often creates confusion among viewers, noting that episodes are filmed well in advance of release.
“The show shoots and you see it a year later,” she said. “So just remember that things are not happening in the chronological order that you might think.”
Abbey, 27, and David, 31, previously confirmed their breakup in a joint statement shared with People earlier this month, saying they had spent “four and a half years together” and still valued their time as a couple.
“At this point, they want different things and have decided to go their separate ways, but they remain friends, wishing each other the best,” the statement read.
Christine also reflected on how Abbey’s understanding of marriage was often misunderstood, explaining that her daughter’s desire to marry was more about connection and normalcy than a traditional milestone.
“Abbey would say she wanted to get married, which really meant, ‘I want to feel like a normal person in the world and do what they do in their relationships,’ ” she said.
Beyond the breakup, Christine emphasized the importance of viewing neurodiverse relationships on their own terms, not through conventional expectations.
“Please don’t judge autistic relationships as if they were typical,” she said. “So many people on the spectrum are not going to do what typical people do.”
Despite the split, she said Abbey’s time with David contributed significantly to her personal development.
“Abbey has grown a ton,” Christine said. “None of the growth would have happened without David.”
The former couple first met on a date at San Diego Zoo Safari Park in July 2021 and became known for sharing milestones and outings on the series, including trips to Disneyland, Universal Studios, and the Griffith Observatory.
