Why Vitamin D is vital beyond bone health, doctors explain
Vitamin D plays a far broader role in maintaining overall health
Often associated primarily with bone strength, Vitamin D plays a far broader role in maintaining overall health, according to medical experts.
Specialists in orthopedics and gynecology say that deficiency of this essential nutrient can quietly contribute to a wide range of health concerns, many of which are frequently overlooked.
In discussions with healthcare professionals including Dr Akhilesh Rathi and Dr Shobha Gupta, it emerged that low vitamin D levels can impact recovery, muscle function, hormonal balance and immune response.
Orthopedic expert Dr Rathi highlighted that vitamin D is critical for calcium absorption, directly influencing bone density and healing.
Patients with low levels often experience delayed recovery from fractures, persistent joint pain and a higher risk of repeat injuries. “Without correcting the deficiency, recovery may remain incomplete,” he noted.
Beyond bones, vitamin D also supports muscle strength and coordination. Deficiency can lead to fatigue, weakness and an increased likelihood of falls, affecting both younger individuals and the elderly.
From a gynecological perspective, Dr Gupta explained that vitamin D plays a role in hormonal regulation.
Low levels have been linked to irregular menstrual cycles, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and fertility challenges.
It is also particularly important during pregnancy and menopause, supporting both maternal health and fetal development while helping maintain bone density later in life.
Experts further point out that vitamin D contributes to immune system regulation and helps control inflammation. A deficiency may slow recovery from illness and reduce overall resilience.
Despite abundant sunlight in countries like India, deficiency remains widespread due to indoor lifestyles, limited sun exposure and dietary patterns.
Doctors recommend regular health check-ups, adequate sunlight, a balanced diet and supplements when prescribed.
They caution against self-medication, noting that excessive intake can also be harmful.
Instead, maintaining balanced levels of vitamin D is key to supporting long-term health across multiple body systems.
