Josh Hutcherson has revisited one of the most talked-about moments from The Hunger Games, criticizing a key scene involving his character Peeta Mellark and joking that he questioned its logic even before filming.

In an interview with GQ, Hutcherson reflected on the 2012 adaptation of The Hunger Games, where his character famously disguises himself in a stream bed by painting his body to blend into the rocks after being injured during the arena games.

The image has since become one of the most recognizable memes associated with the franchise, but Hutcherson admitted he had doubts about the practicality of the moment even while on set.

“I was like, ‘Look, I know this dude’s a baker, but how is he doing this?’” he said. “Baking sourdough is not painting. How the f--- did he do that? Why didn’t someone stop it?”

The actor joked that too many people were involved in the production for the scene to make it through without scrutiny, adding that he ultimately had to go along with it despite his concerns.

In the original novels by Suzanne Collins, Peeta is described as having a natural talent for artistic decoration and camouflage, which plays a role in his survival skills during the Games.

However, Hutcherson suggested the film adaptation did not fully bridge that connection on screen.

Despite his playful criticism, Hutcherson emphasized that he remains fond of the franchise and what it represents.

He praised its themes of resistance and authoritarian control, noting that they remain relevant today.

“I could talk all day about Hunger Games,” he said, calling the series both “fantastic” and meaningful in its messaging.

Hutcherson also acknowledged the massive impact the role had on his career, describing it as a “rocketship of attention and success.”

While he had already appeared in projects like Zathura and Bridge to Terabithia, he said Peeta Mellark remains the character he is most recognized for.

The actor also teased uncertainty about a potential return to the franchise, saying he could neither confirm nor deny whether he might appear in the upcoming prequel installment, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
