Kehlani shares how mental health diagnosis changed her life and perspective
The singer details how diagnosis, therapy and self-awareness reshaped her life
Kehlani has spoken candidly about her mental health journey, reflecting on the personal growth and awareness she has gained since being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder (BPD).
In a recent interview with Vibe, the 30-year-old singer shared how her diagnosis, first revealed in April 2025, marked a turning point in understanding herself and managing her well-being.
“When you finally have the tools, you have the diagnosis. But along with the diagnosis comes the work,” Kehlani said, emphasizing that treatment has included medication and various forms of therapy, including somatic healing.
She described developing what she called a “tool belt of awareness,” allowing her to better recognize symptoms and triggers.
“I’m starting to learn what kind of life I have to lead as a person whose mind is different,” she explained.
As part of that process, the singer has also embraced transparency with those around her, encouraging loved ones to step in when warning signs appear.
She noted that behaviors such as lack of sleep, rapid speech, or sudden bursts of activity can signal a crisis, prompting her to seek immediate support.
Kehlani also reflected on a particularly difficult period marked by “extreme paranoia,” which she said was intensified by emotional responses to global events, including the ongoing Israel-Hamas War.
The experience ultimately led her to seek professional help and receive a formal diagnosis.
Looking back, the artist acknowledged that while the moment was overwhelming, it became a catalyst for change.
“I wouldn’t have gotten the diagnosis if I didn’t fly off the handles the way that I did,” she said.
Since then, Kehlani has focused on building structure and stability in her life, crediting routine, discipline, and self-awareness as key factors in her progress.
