Tina Fey has shared her professional insights regarding why she believes legendary American football quarterback Tom Brady was a perfect fit to host Saturday Night Live.
Speaking to Damian Holbrook at the HISTORYTalks event in Philadelphia on April 18, the comedian reflected on her experiences working alongside the athlete.
Referring to the 48-year-old sports icon, who famously fronted an episode of the sketch comedy show in 2005, the "Mean Girls" star emphasised the unique advantages that professional sportsmen bring to the high-pressure live environment.
"The thing about Tom and so many other athletes, we always would say at SNL that athletes make the best hosts because one, nothing is at stake for them, like they don't care if it goes well, they're not trying to get a movie out of it, two, they're coachable," Fey remarked.
She further elaborated that unlike some prestigious film stars, athletes are exceptionally adept at following direct instructions without ego.
"You can go up to an athlete host and be like, 'Yeah, do that faster.' They're like, 'Yes, ma'am.' You can't go on to like an Oscar-winning film actor and say like, '[Be] faster,'" she explained.
Fey noted that athletes possess a "state of relaxed readiness" and remain "just kind of chill" throughout the production. Closing the discussion with a touch of wit, she added, "In my mind, I’m Tom Brady."
Having joined the programme as a writer in 1997 before becoming a cast member in 2000, Fey remains a definitive voice on the show’s enduring legacy.
