A 21-year-old Austrian man, identified as Beran A, has pleaded guilty to plotting a jihadist terrorist attack targeting Taylor Swift’s 2024 Eras Tour performances in Vienna.

As his trial opened on Tuesday in Wiener Neustadt, the suspect admitted to charges specifically relating to the planned attack on the Ernst Happel Stadium.

Prosecutors alleged that the defendant intended to target the massive crowds gathered for the sold-out shows, with the chilling goal to "kill as many people as possible" using knives or homemade shrapnel bombs.

While Beran A pleaded guilty to the concert-related offences and his membership in the Islamic State group, he entered a plea of not guilty regarding the attempted murder of a security official in Mecca.

This separate charge involves a broader international plot where Beran A and two associates allegedly planned simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan 2024.

Although those plans largely failed to materialise for the defendant, authorities discovered bomb-making materials at his residence just one day before Swift was scheduled to take the stage in Vienna.

The revelation of the plot led to the immediate cancellation of three concerts, an event Taylor Swift later described as "devastating," noting it filled her with a "new sense of fear."

Despite the suspect’s guilty plea, he faces a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years if convicted on all counts.

The trial is scheduled to continue on 12 May, as the court further examines the defendant's links to global extremist networks and his efforts to recruit others into his radicalised cell before the intervention of international intelligence agencies.
