Christopher Nolan compares pressure of ‘The Odyssey’ to making ‘The Dark Knight’
'The Odyssey' is slated to hit theaters on July 17
Christopher Nolan is opening up about the immense pressure behind his upcoming epic The Odyssey, comparing the experience to the intense expectations he faced while making The Dark Knight.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker, who is adapting Homer’s legendary poem for the big screen, admitted that taking on such a beloved literary classic comes with enormous responsibility.
“There’s a massive amount of pressure,” Nolan said, explaining that anyone attempting The Odyssey must carry “the hopes and dreams of people for epic movies everywhere.”
Because the project is based on one of the most celebrated works in literary history, Nolan acknowledged that audience expectations were already sky-high before cameras even started rolling.
While discussing the burden of bringing the Greek tale to life, the director said he drew lessons from his experience making The Dark Knight, one of the most acclaimed superhero films ever released.
“What I learned... is that what people want from a movie about a beloved story, a beloved set of characters, is they want a strong and sincere interpretation,” Nolan said, stressing that viewers respond most to a filmmaker who fully commits to the material.
Released in 2008, The Dark Knight became a defining moment in modern blockbuster cinema, starring Christian Bale as Batman opposite Heath Ledger’s iconic Joker.
Fans are now eagerly awaiting Nolan’s next ambitious spectacle, with The Odyssey slated to hit theaters on July 17.
