Explore the hidden benefits of cucumber skin
A dietitian shares essential tips for eating a cucumber correctly
Cucumber is a summer favourite for many good reasons. It is juicy, refreshing and crunchy, making it perfect to beat the summer heat.
However, many individuals may be unintentionally lowering its efficiency through poor preparation. Dietician Shweta J. Panchal took to Instagram in a Wednesday post to explain how one prepares a cucumber before consumption makes a significant difference to its health benefits.
The expert advocated that a cucumber is the healthiest when eaten whole, rather than peeled. "The skin of a cucumber is where the majority of its fibre, silica, Vitamin K, and antioxidants live. When you peel it, you’re left with mostly water and very little else," she revealed.
Removing the peel strips away vital nutrition, particularly insoluble fibre, which supports regular bowel movements and smooth digestion.
Furthermore, the skin carries antioxidants that assist the body in managing oxidative stress and inflammation.
How to have a cucumber correctly?
While eating the fruit whole is ideal, there are specific circumstances where peeling is necessary. The dietician noted this applies only if the fruit is waxed.
"Commercially sold cucumbers are often coated in wax to extend shelf life. In that case, wash it thoroughly with warm water and a brush, or buy unwaxed cucumbers from your local sabziwala."
To enhance the fruit's natural benefits, the expert recommended a simple hydration recipe:
- Wash the cucumber thoroughly (using warm water if waxed).
- Keep the skin intact to preserve fibre and vitamins.
- Add a pinch of pink salt.
Shweta J. Panchal suggested this salt addition as a hydration hack, as it helps maintain electrolyte balance during the summer.
