Christopher Thomas, 33, is currently recovering from a life-threatening injury after his throat was slit during a violent encounter in Portland, Oregon.

On 19 April, Thomas sought refuge in a local Denny’s restaurant while bleeding heavily from a wound so deep that his trachea was exposed.

According to a preventive detention affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, a witness observed a commotion in a nearby parking lot before assisting Thomas into the establishment.

The rapid intervention of the restaurant staff and the witness has been credited with preventing Thomas from bleeding to death.

Following the incident, authorities arrested 39-year-old Christopher James Parkins, who was found in possession of a fixed-blade knife partially concealed by his sleeve.

Parkins has pleaded not guilty to charges including attempted murder and first-degree assault. During police questioning, Parkins reportedly admitted to consuming methamphetamine and expressed confusion regarding his surroundings, stating that "everything feels like its not even real."

He remains in custody at the Multnomah County Detention Centre without bond and is scheduled for a preventive detention hearing on 4 May.

The victim’s mother, Deborah Thomas, recently spoke with KOIN 6 News to express her immense gratitude to the people who saved her son.

She noted that he was unhoused at the time of the attack and that she remains unaware of what incited the violence.

While Thomas survived the necessary emergency surgery, his path to recovery remains ongoing. This case highlights the escalating concerns regarding safety and mental health for the city's vulnerable populations while legal proceedings against Parkins continue.
