'The Devil Wears Prada 2' storms box office, doubles original film’s opening weekend
The sequel outperformed recent releases in its opening weekend race
The Devil Wears Prada 2 has stormed the global box office with a powerful debut weekend, marking a strong return for the beloved fashion franchise led by Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt.
Released on Friday, May 1, the long-awaited sequel delivered a standout performance in its opening frame, earning approximately $77 million domestically and $156.6 million worldwide, according to reports from Variety and Deadline.
The film’s launch significantly outpaced its predecessor. The original The Devil Wears Prada (2006) opened to $27.5 million domestically, making the sequel’s debut more than double its initial box office haul.
The strong performance also placed the film ahead of other recent releases, including the biopic Michael, which earned around $54 million in its second weekend.
A major driver of the sequel’s success has been the return of its core cast. Meryl Streep reprises her iconic role as Miranda Priestly, alongside Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel. Their reunion has been widely credited with reigniting audience interest nearly two decades after the original film.
The sequel also expanded its cultural footprint through a series of high-profile cameo appearances.
Naomi Campbell, Ciara, Lady Gaga, Ashley Graham, Amelia Gray, and Heidi Klum all make appearances, adding additional star power and boosting social media buzz around the release.
According to IMDb’s synopsis, the story follows Andy Sachs as she reunites with Miranda Priestly while navigating the shifting landscape of traditional magazine publishing amid industry decline.
