Vivica A. Fox credits ‘Kill Bill’ legacy for landing new genre role
The actress says the project represents rare genre opportunities for Black actors
Vivica A. Fox is reflecting on her latest role in the upcoming film Is God Is, revealing that she was the sole choice for the part and embraced the opportunity without hesitation.
The 61-year-old actress stars as Ruby in the new project, directed by playwright and filmmaker Aleshea Harris.
In the story, Fox’s character is referred to as “God” by her daughters, adding a layered symbolic meaning to the role.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Fox said Harris was clear from the beginning about her casting vision. “She said, ‘You’re my first and only choice to play God,’” Fox recalled. “And I said, ‘Wowsers! OK.’”
The director reportedly drew inspiration from Fox’s performance in Kill Bill, citing its stylistic influence as a key reason for her selection. Harris described her vision as aligned with cinematic storytelling reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino’s approach.
Fox said the offer was an immediate yes. She also noted that the project represents a rare opportunity for Black actors in the genre space, comparing its tone to recent films expanding representation in Hollywood.
The actress added that if audiences enjoyed films like Sinners, they are likely to connect with Is God Is as well, pointing to its genre-driven storytelling and emotional depth.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Fox reflected on her journey in the industry with pride, saying she feels grateful when looking back at her body of work.
“I go, ‘Wow, you’ve been doing the damn thing,’” she said, describing a sense of fulfillment and appreciation for her long-running career.
Fox also highlighted the progress she has seen in Hollywood, particularly for Black women in film and television.
She pointed to the success of creators like Shonda Rhimes, actor-director Regina King, and her own work producing more than 25 television films for Lifetime.
While acknowledging that more progress is still needed, Fox said she is encouraged by the growing opportunities for women in the industry, both in front of and behind the camera.
“Is there more room to grow? Absolutely,” she said. “But I am very happy right now where Hollywood is at and the opportunities for not only African American women but women in general.”
