Nicholas Brendon’s cause of death revealed following March passing
'The Buffy' star was remembered by his family as creative and deeply passionate person
Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died from a combination of atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, according to newly released findings from the coroner.
Brendon passed away in March at the age of 54. In a report obtained by People, coroner Todd Zeiner confirmed the death was natural, with acute pneumonia and a previous myocardial infarction listed as contributing factors.
Authorities reported no signs of foul play at the scene, noting that nothing appeared disturbed or out of place when law enforcement arrived to assist with the investigation.
According to the coroner’s findings, a close friend of Brendon, Theresa Fortier, was present at his residence and placed the 911 call after noticing his condition deteriorating.
Zeiner’s report detailed that Brendon had been experiencing a persistent cough and chest pain in the days leading up to his death.
He had reportedly been self-medicating with over-the-counter medication and had declined medical attention despite being advised to seek hospital care.
The report also noted that Brendon had a history of smoking and had previously suffered a heart attack, for which he did not pursue further treatment.
His family initially announced his passing in a statement shared on his Instagram account, saying he died “in his sleep of natural causes.”
They described him as a passionate and creative individual who had recently focused on painting and visual art.
The statement also acknowledged his past struggles while noting that he had been undergoing treatment and was optimistic about the future at the time of his death.
Fans and colleagues continue to remember Brendon for his long-running role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where his character became a central part of the show’s ensemble cast.
His family has requested privacy as they mourn his loss and reflect on his life and legacy.
