Helena Bonham Carter left ‘The White Lotus’ over Mike White's request: Report

Helena Bonham Carter and Mike White locked horns over her portrayal, leading her to leave “The White Lotus.”

The 59-year-old actress suddenly left the highly acclaimed HBO series nine days after starting to film Season 4 in France.

Variety reported Monday that Carter had “creative differences” with White — the mastermind and director of “The White Lotus” — because he wanted a more “animated performance” from her.

Sources revealed that Carter was intended to portray a faded star seeking to revive her career.

An HBO spokesperson had previously informed Page Six regarding Carter’s departure, “As filming commenced for season four of ‘The White Lotus,’ it became clear that the character Mike White crafted for Helena Bonham Carter did not work out on set.”

“HBO, the producers, and Mike White are disappointed not to collaborate with her but hold her in high regard and are eager to work with the esteemed actress on a future project,” added the spokesperson.

Laura Dern was announced as Carter’s successor just a few days later.

Dern, at 59, isn't stepping into Carter’s exact shoes, but instead, White has crafted a unique character for the “Big Little Lies” star, according to Page Six.

Dern isn’t new to “The White Lotus” — she made a brief, uncredited voice cameo in the second season.

She has previously collaborated with White on the 2007 film “Year of the Dog” and the 2011 HBO drama “Enlightened.”

Set during the Cannes Film Festival, “The White Lotus” Season 4 takes place at an opulent resort in France, according to the show’s official press release.

The star-studded lineup includes Rosie Perez, Max Greenfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennet, Heather Graham, Steve Coogan, AJ Michalka, and Sandra Bernhard.

As reported by Variety, the series boasts a whopping $120 million budget this season and will center on the Cannes Film Festival throughout its seven-month filming schedule.
