Man critically injured after airport carjacking drags him 90 feet
Authorities responded to reports of assault and carjacking at Portland International Airport
A man suffered critical injuries when he was dragged and thrown out of a vehicle during a carjacking incident in Oregon.
On Monday (May 4), authorities responded to reports of an assault and carjacking at Portland International Airport, as per KATU, KPTV, and KGW News.
According to KATU, a man was loading his Nissan Rogue to collect two individuals at the airport when a man, identified as 52-year-old Vidal Pedraza, seized the chance to jump in and drive away.
Mark Campbell, seated in the back, was thrown from the car as it accelerated away.
"I just assumed he was gone," Helena Wolfe conveyed to KATU News about Campbell, who is a family friend. "Mark rolled until he stopped, motionless and facedown."
Witnesses informed authorities that the suspect drove erratically while Campbell clung to the vehicle.
Wolfe told KPTV, “It was just unreal. It's true. I watched as my car drove off into the distance.”
PEOPLE has sought feedback from Portland Police Bureau, Portland International Airport, Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, and Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.
Campbell was dragged approximately 30 yards (90 feet) from where the car initially had been, as reported by KPTV citing Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.
CCTV obtained by law enforcement shows Campbell being ejected after Pedraza swerved and hit a curb, according to the news outlet.
The police tracked both Pedraza and the vehicle to a Dutch Bros parking area, where one witness reported Pedraza allegedly attempted to access his van, based on KATU's report.
Currently in the ICU, Campbell has suffered five fractured ribs, memory issues, head trauma, and a concussion, according to court papers obtained by the outlet.
On the other hand, Pedraza had told police he hadn't slept in five days and needed transportation to return to Los Angeles, KATU reported.
During his court appearance on Tuesday (May 5), Pedraza was charged with numerous offenses, including two counts of robbery, six counts of assault, two counts of theft, two counts of reckless endangerment, in addition to charges of criminal mischief, reckless driving, possession of a stolen car, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
"We've taken strong measures against him, charging him with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, as well as other charges like unauthorised vehicle use, possession of a stolen car, first-degree theft, failing to fulfill driver duties when someone is injured, and some reckless endangerment charges," Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez stated to KATU News.
