Daycare worker filmed 'tossing' infant, leading to seizures and brain bleed: Police
Florida daycare employee has been arrested following intense and severe mistreatment of baby in her care
A Florida daycare employee has been arrested following intense and severe mistreatment of a baby in her care, which led to seizures and the baby becoming unresponsive, according to local police.
Alyssa Thompson, 30, faces charges of aggravated child abuse, as reported by the Lake City Police Department.
The incidents took place across various dates in April at Wee Care Too, a daycare center on NW Gwen Lake Avenue in Lake City, approximately 60 miles from Jacksonville.
The investigation commenced on April 20, prompted by a report regarding a child's "medical episode involving seizures, lethargy, and fever," as stated in an arrest document obtained by Law&Crime.
While at the hospital, the infant experienced seizures and was relocated to a pediatric medical facility in Gainesville, according to police.
Later that day, the daycare director reviewed video footage and informed law enforcement of "inappropriate actions displayed by" Thompson, the charging document noted.
"I saw Alyssa Thompson aggressively placing [the baby] into a bouncy chair, causing her head to hit the metal frame," the arrest report states. "The video shows the baby's head jerking from the impact with the bar. Shortly after, about 20 minutes later, she roughly removes [the baby] from the crib and drops her onto the changing table. This drop is from a height where [the baby’s] head repeatedly hits the table."
Later footage captures Thompson attending to the baby on the changing table. When the defendant lifts the baby, she "appears lifeless and not moving," the arrest report claims.
This was not the first instance of alleged mistreatment, according to authorities.
The pediatric hospital doctor noted that the baby "suffered a skull fracture with brain bleeding" and "doubted that such injuries were caused by a one-time incident," as per the charging document.
On April 13, "numerous other examples of child mistreatment were observed," say the police.
In quick succession, the footage shows the defendant "grabbing and throwing" the child onto the table, then lifting, spinning, and dropping her again, according to the document. Each time, the baby's head "is seen hitting against" the table's rails, police reported. After changing, the defendant "lifts her by the arms and smashes her head into the table's rail."
Following this, the defendant "forcefully places" the baby in an infant foam seat, based on the charging document.
Thompson remains in custody at the Columbia County Jail with no option for bail, court records reveal.
