Students experienced illness after buying cookies from a school staff member in Texas.
A worker at Owen Goodnight Middle School has been placed on leave after numerous children became ill from consuming the cookies.
In a letter to parents and guardians, Principal Joe Mitchell stated that four students admitted to buying and eating the cookies before being checked by the school nurse for assessment.
Mitchell noted that the matter was communicated to school administration and the San Marcos Police Department.
“We are fully cooperating with all essential inspections to guarantee a comprehensive inquiry,” he mentioned.
“The involved staff member has been removed from the district. Further actions concerning personnel will be determined according to district policy and outcomes,” the principal also mentioned.
“Ensuring the safety and health of our students is our top concern,” the letter stated. “We are taking this issue very seriously and reiterating that staff members are prohibited from vending or giving personal food items to students at any time.”
Mitchell advised parents to get medical counsel and inform the school if their child showed “unusual symptoms.”
“We recognise that this information may be troubling, and we thank you for your patience and support as we handle the situation,” he finalised.
The cookies given to students are now held by law enforcement, which is conducting examinations, as reported by FOX 7.
Lisa McClellan, whose grandson purchased the cookies at school, recounted how he expressed feeling unwell after consuming the treat.
She informed FOX 7 that her grandson mentioned, "I just felt off and couldn't stop thinking about the cookies.”
However, a different parent said her son didn't exhibit any symptoms after eating the cookies.
“They’re simply homemade cookies with frosting and a filling," the parent told the outlet. "I was raving to my friends about how fantastic they were. I exclaimed, ‘Wow, these are excellent, kudos to the baker, whoever made them.'"
