Savannah Guthrie returns to Today show after sudden on-air absence sparks questions
The anchor resumed hosting alongside Willie Geist during the live broadcast
Savannah Guthrie made an unexpected return to the Today show on Wednesday, appearing on-air without addressing her brief and unexplained absence from the previous broadcast.
The 54-year-old co-anchor rejoined the program alongside Willie Geist, continuing the morning show as usual despite growing curiosity from viewers about her sudden disappearance a day earlier.
Guthrie’s brief absence sparked discussion among audiences, particularly as no on-air explanation was provided during her return.
While the show did not directly address the reason behind her exit, it followed a pattern of earlier instances where she was previously allowed to step away from the program for personal matters.
During the broadcast, Guthrie shifted focus to lighter entertainment news, discussing the upcoming series Elle, a prequel to the 2001 film Legally Blonde.
She expressed enthusiasm for the project, referencing her connection to the original character Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon.
“I know, I love Legally Blonde. I connect with this character,” Guthrie said on-air, adding that the new series would explore the character’s early life in high school.
The segment also included a nostalgic moment tied to Guthrie’s past, when former teachers of hers appeared on the program during an earlier broadcast.
Fellow anchor Jenna Bush Hager had previously asked them about Guthrie’s school years, to which they described her as a strong student.
Guthrie’s latest on-air exit and return come amid public interest in her personal circumstances, including previous reporting connected to family-related matters. However, no official statement has been issued regarding the reason for her most recent absence.
