As burnout and stress continue to rise in an increasingly hyperconnected world, wellness experts say even a few minutes of meditation each day can make a meaningful difference to mental health.

Modern lifestyles driven by constant notifications, packed schedules, and the fear of missing out have left many people feeling mentally exhausted and emotionally overwhelmed.

While meditation is often associated with lengthy retreats or complex routines, experts say mindfulness practices can be both simple and practical for everyday life.

Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Dr. Archika Didi, a meditation expert and vice chairperson of the Vishwa Jagriti Mission, shared a realistic five-minute meditation routine designed for busy professionals and students.

According to Dr. Archika, meditation begins with a change in mindset. The first step involves briefly separating oneself mentally from stress and external distractions. By reminding yourself, “I am not this stress; I am the observer of it,” individuals may create emotional distance from anxiety and pressure.

Another key part of the routine focuses on the Agya Chakra, the point between the eyebrows often associated with clarity and concentration in meditation practices. Participants are encouraged to close their eyes, focus on this area, and imagine calming light entering the mind to help reduce mental overload.

The routine also includes controlled breathing techniques known as Kumbhaka, where breathing is slowed and briefly held to calm the nervous system. Dr. Archika described this as a quick “reset” for an overactive mind.

Additionally, Bhramari Pranayama — a breathing exercise involving a humming sound — is recommended to promote instant calmness and mental clarity.

The final step encourages visualising a protective aura around oneself, intended to create a sense of emotional safety and inner balance.

Experts say such short mindfulness exercises can help improve focus, reduce stress levels, and support emotional wellbeing, especially for people struggling to find time for longer self-care routines.
