Kevin McKidd teases possible role in HBO 'Harry Potter' reboot amid fan speculation
The actor also hinted at a possible return to 'Grey’s Anatomy' in the future
Kevin McKidd has sparked speculation over a potential role in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter TV series after revealing he would be “very excited” to join the project, with rumours linking him to the character Arthur Weasley.
The Grey’s Anatomy star, who recently stepped away from his long-running role as Dr. Owen Hunt after 18 seasons, addressed the speculation during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he stopped short of confirming any casting but did not dismiss the idea either.
“I saw something about this. And listen, I would never say never. I’m a massive Harry Potter fan,” McKidd said, acknowledging growing online chatter surrounding his possible involvement.
Interest intensified after reports suggested actress Gracie Cochrane, who is set to play Ginny Weasley in the series, followed McKidd on social media, fuelling fan theories about a possible Weasley family connection.
McKidd also reflected on a missed opportunity in the original film franchise, revealing he had previously been considered for a role in the final two Harry Potter movies but was unable to take part due to scheduling and contractual issues on another project.
“I was asked to be in it once already,” he said, adding that the experience still “makes me sad.”
He further hinted that he may have been in contention for a darker role in the wizarding world, with speculation pointing toward the werewolf character Fenrir Greyback, though no official confirmation was given.
While nothing has been confirmed regarding casting in the new HBO adaptation, McKidd said the idea of revisiting the franchise in any form remains appealing, particularly the role of Arthur Weasley.
“The idea of getting another crack at that gets me very excited,” he said, referring to the beloved wizarding father from J.K. Rowling’s original series.
Beyond the wizarding world, McKidd also teased a possible return to Grey’s Anatomy, joking that his character Owen Hunt could still resurface at Grey Sloan Memorial or even return from Paris, adding that Scotland might be a better fit than France.
