Michael Pennington, the distinguished British stage and screen actor celebrated for his prolific Shakespearean career and his iconic role in the Star Wars franchise, has died at the age of 82. His passing was confirmed on Sunday by The Telegraph.

While a specific cause of death was not disclosed, the arts community has begun mourning the loss of a performer whose work spanned over six decades.

To millions of cinema fans, Pennington was the face of Moff Jerjerrod, the Imperial commander overseeing the construction of the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi (1983).

His performance famously captured the palpable tension of a bureaucratic officer castigated by Darth Vader for falling behind schedule. Beyond the galaxy far, far away, he was a giant of the British theatre.

An Honorary Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company, he co-founded the English Shakespeare Company in 1986, revolutionising modern interpretations of classical works.

His versatile screen credits included playing Laertes in the 1969 film version of Hamlet and portraying former Labour leader Michael Foot in the 2011 biopic The Iron Lady opposite Meryl Streep.

More recently, he provided the voice for "The Trust" in Ridley Scott’s Raised by Wolves and appeared in popular series such as Endeavour and Silent Witness.

An accomplished author of ten books on acting and literature, Pennington was regarded as a true intellectual of the craft.

He is survived by his son from his marriage to Katharine Barker and leaves behind a legacy as one of the most respected classical actors of his generation.
