YouTube, Snap, and TikTok have formally reached a settlement agreement in what represents the first social media accountability case to have been headed for trial. Details of the settlements were set out in court filings submitted on Friday at a federal court in Oakland, California.

The settlement is intended to cover the full costs associated with enabling school districts to foster safe, positive environments for children, and to address the youth mental health crises that the companies have been accused of exacerbating.

Kentucky school district case still active

The primary impetus behind the disclosure was to resolve claims brought by a Kentucky school district. Separately, Meta's Facebook and Instagram platforms remain scheduled to face trial on 15 June, brought by the same district.

Breathitt County is one of approximately 1,200 school districts across the United States that have taken legal action against social media companies, alleging that these platforms fuelled a youth mental health crisis and left schools to bear the consequences.

The district is seeking in excess of $60 million to address the impact of social media on student mental health, including costs associated with what it describes as engagement friction. In addition, the district is requesting a court order compelling the companies to modify their platforms and reduce addictive design features.

YouTube's response

In a statement following the settlement, YouTube said: "This matter has been amicably resolved, and our focus remains on building age-appropriate products and parental controls that deliver on that promise."

Earlier jury verdict against Meta and Google

The settlements follow a significant ruling on 25 March, in which a Los Angeles jury found both Meta and Alphabet's Google liable for negligence in the design of social media platforms that cause harm to young users.

A combined award of $6 million was granted to a 20-year-old woman who stated she had become addicted to social media during her childhood.

Companies maintain they have acted responsibly

Despite the legal proceedings, the companies involved have consistently rejected the allegations, maintaining that they have taken meaningful steps to protect younger users on their respective platforms.
