Authorities said the suspect was injured during the incident before being arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Officials have not released the identities of either the slain deputy marshal or the suspect, and have not disclosed why the arrest warrant had been issued.

FBI leads joint investigation

The FBI, Louisiana State Police and the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office have launched a joint investigation, with the FBI leading the case as an assault on a federal officer.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau was providing full resources to the investigation and asked for prayers for the deputy marshal's family and friends.

Several neighbours told local media they knew the suspect and were surprised by the incident, describing him as friendly and well-liked.

Another nearby resident said she heard multiple gunshots before rushing to protect her children inside her home.
