Ryan Toby reveals he 'fell for' Lauryn Hill during 'Sister Act 2' filming

Ryan Toby's brief infatuation with his Sister Act 2 co-star led to heartache.

Toby, now 49, acted alongside Lauryn Hill in the 1993 movie and remembered quickly developing feelings for her.

However, as he recounted to hosts Tank and J. Valentine on The R&B Money Podcast, he soon discovered it was a hopeless situation.

"When I got the news that they wanted me in the film, we flew to LA. Met a young Lauryn Hill. We really connected because we were the only two from Jersey," he recalled.

"Myself, her, and Jennifer Love Hewitt were the only genuine high schoolers on set. Everyone else was older, more mature. So we would often attend tutoring and similar activities," he shared.

"I believe Lauryn stayed in the apartment right beneath mine. I fell for Lauryn Hill at the Oakwoods, truly. I really had a crush on her," Toby admitted.

However, that crush didn't last long once he realised she was with someone else.

"Do you know what crushed me? Her real boyfriend dropped by one day. That was Omar Epps."

Laughing, he added, "I won't deny it, that memory still stings. I wasn't prepared... I gained a lot of respect for him that day and realized you have to seize what you desire in this world."

"Deondray [Gossfield] reminded me of something I barely recall, but he was like, 'Do you remember when you, me, and Lauryn [Hill] took Lauryn's car and drove around the Hollywood Hills playing Ding-Dong Ditch? Knocking on doors, daring each other to ring the doorbell and then running away?'"

Toby, who later pursued music with the group City High, expressed feeling wistful about remembering those times.

"We were just kids," he said nostalgically. "Just silly kids, looking for fun on a Friday night. We weren't allowed into clubs or anything, so we did what mischievous kids would do."
