At least 11 people lost their lives and scores more sustained injuries after a tour bus veered off the road and overturned in Mexico.

Following the May 1 accident, six individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, and five others succumbed to their injuries at hospitals, as stated in a news release from the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Nayarit.

The bus was making its way from Jalisco to a leisure spot in Nayarit when it went off the highway and tipped over near Amatlán de Cañas, as reported by Reuters, referencing information from the Nayarit state government.

Five of the 11 individuals who died were identified by the authorities as Margarita Gutiérrez Villegas, Mario Reyna Chávez, the 47-year-old Alejandro Lozano Morales, 33-year-old Paola Núñez Flores, and 62-year-old Martha Gutiérrez.

Nayarit officials mentioned in their announcement that they are continuing efforts to identify the other victims of the tragedy.

They shared a list of 31 people who suffered injuries in the crash and received medical care at different local hospitals.

Those impacted varied in age from 4 to 47, and officials noted several were locals from Amatlán de Cañas and Jalisco.

Emergency units from both Nayarit and Jalisco, in addition to police, prosecution agents, and forensics experts, promptly arrived at the site.

Authorities from Nayarit and Jalisco are currently looking into the incident's causes, according to their statements.

Photos obtained by Reuters display the white bus lying on its side, coated with mud on a hill near Amatlán de Cañas.

Additional images show passenger possessions thrown outside and hanging from the bus's windows.

Footage captured by TRT World shows investigators reviewing the bus exterior while the area is cordoned off with yellow tape. A clip reveals a window of the turned-over bus open, smeared with mud.
