YNW Melly legal team raises concerns over ‘shocking circumstances’ in murder case
The rapper has reportedly spent years in custody, including time in solitary confinement
YNW Melly is facing renewed scrutiny as his legal team raises concerns over what they describe as “shocking circumstances” surrounding his ongoing murder case and prolonged pre-trial detention.
The rapper, whose legal name is Jamell Maurice Demons, is awaiting a retrial over allegations that he murdered his friends YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser in 2018.
According to his attorneys, Demons has spent approximately seven years in custody without a conviction, including three years in solitary confinement with no access to phone calls or family visits.
In a statement shared on social media, the defense team criticised the court and prosecutors, arguing that the conditions of his detention amount to inhumane treatment despite the legal presumption of innocence.
“The Court, the State Attorney’s Office, and all who observed this bond hearing should have been deeply troubled by the clear evidence presented regarding the inhumane conditions Mr. Demons has endured,” the statement read.
They further claimed that the court’s decision to deny bond has allowed those conditions to continue without adequate consideration of his circumstances.
The legal team added that they had never encountered such conditions in their decades of practice, describing the situation as unprecedented and deeply concerning within the justice system.
They also said colleagues within the legal field had expressed “disbelief and outrage” after reviewing the details of the case.
YNW Melly was arrested in connection with the 2018 deaths of his two associates, and has remained in custody as legal proceedings continue, with his retrial still pending.
